Tomorrow begins the third week of retirement. PoBoy visited his primary physician (family doctor) the middle of last week and found out he had Bronchitus. A great way to begin retirement. Anyway was given a 10 day, 2 times a day horse pill (augmentin) which seems to have cured him. Also received a cough medicine containing codiene -- PoBoy read the label wrong and instead of taking up to two teaspoons, overdosed on two tablespoons. Misread the label. Anyway it sure made him sleep sound, so sound that people where he lives called the paramedics who brought him around. PoBoy is okay now.
The office where he once worked for more then ten years called him to assist one of the ladies who had taken over some of his duties that he did while there. She was a little overwhelmed at all the new things she had to learn. So PoBoy, loyal as always, went in to assist her. PoBoy answered her quesions and shook hands with his former boss and the boss asked him to stop by one more time before he left for Florida. The lady who needed his assistance also provided him with assistance to locate the closest Secretary of State's office (License Bureau).
PoBoy left the office and headed uptown. Traffic was vicious. He drove down the square keeping an eye out for the license bureau. Just past the heart of the square, PoBoy spotted the bureau on his left and as luck would have it, a parking spot stood available almost in front of the building. He made quick left across the two lane square and pulled into the parking spot. Depositing two quarters in the parking meter, he noted he had half an hour before he'd need to add more. He felt in his pocket and found one remaining quarter.
The girl at the office had hinted that this would be a good time to visit the bureau, "you should be able to get in and right out." That became PoBoy's hope too. But inside after taking a number and finding a seat he heard a number called for service: "075" PoBoy glanced down at the piece of paper in his fingers: "095" Twenty people ahead of him.
Anyone who knows PoBoy is aware that PoBoy actually and literally detests "lines." PoBoy blames that on his days in the Navy where he had to stand in lines that were 3,000 to 4,000 personnel long. You stood there if you wanted to eat and PoBoy missed many meals because of his attitude toward lines. He'd get up early for breakfast though and go through the line two or three times. He loved the Navy SOS, a tomatoe sauce with hamburger and the tang of spice over hot buttered toast. It became his favorite breakfast but he never could figure out what all the ingredients were.
An half hour had passed and the new number was 87. He would have to spend his last quarter for 15 minutes more of parking. Hopefully he'd get called up by that time. Finally "#95" and PoBoy walked to the counter and gave the lady his driver's license and and paperwork for boat and trailer. "Can I write a check?" PoBoy asked. The lady answered yes and he wrote a check for just over 111.00 but now the boat and trailer belong to him.
So tomorrow begins week three of retirement. PoBoy is now very close to being prepared to make the final move of his life. Everything seems to be set for Saturday morning, November 01, 2008. The trip is close to 1400 miles. Plan is drive half of it on Saturday, sleep over near Tennessee, and finish trip on Sunday. So first day of living in Florida appears to be Monday, November 03, 2008.
