The last day of June. PoBoy just returned this past weekend from a trip to southern Illinois. The trip down was uneventful and we made good time, considering the storms.

There was a death in PoBoy's son's family on Tuesday of last week. We stayed in order to help clean up the area, doing odds and ends as needed. We did not stay for the funeral.

We were both very tired when we began our northern trip back to Michigan. PoBoy was glad to see signs saying Michigan so many miles. He was driving along when he felt an urgent urge to go to the bathroom. PoBoy was in the outermost lane. He glanced to the side and saw up ahead some blue signs which usually can mean a rest stop. As he got closer PoBoy could see that the signs were saying various gas stations and food exit. It wasn't what PoBoy wanted and he turned his attention back to the road.

Orange barrels were cutting off his progress, as the lane was merging into a construction zone. PoBoy had missed the merging signs. He began braking. PoBoy noticed two vehicles ahead just about to enter the single lane. PoBoy knew he couldn't pass them. More brake. PoBoy steered the car as close to the orange barrels as he could get without slamming on the breaks and possibly losing control. Then PoBoy glanced to right to see if there was an opening to get into the lane. It was just about that time that a tractor trailer rig was coming up to the narrowed entrance. PoBoy did his best to steer closer to the barrels but it was not quite enough.

The tractor went by but the trailer did not clear. It clipped what PoBoy calls Mickey Mouse mirror because of the way it bubbles out. It was indeed shocking. But PoBoy held the car in place. Not sure exactly what occurred because it all happened in a blink of an eye. PoBoy did however see the innards of the Mickey Mouse mirror hanging down.

An opening was present so PoBoy followed the truck driver around and up to a truck stop. The truck driver was quite hostile and belligerent and well he should have been. PoBoy's stupidty had almost cost him and his son's life.

PoBoy's son woke in the back seat. He didn't know quite what had happened.

PoBoy apologized to the truck driver but PoBoy thought he was in the mind set that he planned to sue him or something like that. Anyway the driver escorted PoBoy into the truck stop building and we had the lady behind the counter call the local sherrif. It took the sherrif about an hour to arrive and the young truck driver then explained his story (his side of what occurred). Then the officer came to PoBoy and who told him it was his fault and how PoBoy thought the truck driver did a superb job of defensive driving. The officer took my drivers license and Avis rental package and said he had to make some calls from the patrol car.

He came back and handed the young truck driver his driver's license back and then came to PoBoy. He asked where my insurance card was. PoBoy had totally forgot to insert the insurance card into the Avis package. He had only PLP. Then the officer politely informed PoBoy that he must carry that insurance card at all times and he said if he had pulled PoBoy for speeding he'd given him a ticket for not having the card as well as the speeding violation. Imagine driving almost a 1,000 miles without your insurance card. Dumb old PoBoy for sure.

There was not a scratch on the car except for the damaged inside of the mirror. We finished the drive home and PoBoy literally collasped on the bed.

Returned the car to Avis and filled out their incident report. So PoBoy figures sometime this week he will be receiving bad economical news. Well at least bad for PoBoy's tight budget. PoBoy also called the man who will be hauling his boat to Florida, and have tentatively arranged a cost value of 1,000 to 1500 dollars depending on cost of disel in November. Oh, he is also taking PoBoy to Florida. So PoBoy did at least accomplish something on his upcoming (uneventful PoBoy hopes) venture.

PoBoy is taking the day off today as an added rest day. His nerves are still in torment but PoBoy is okay otherwise. Thank God for that miracle.

The fourth of July is coming at the end of the week and PoBoy is definitely not going anywhere. It's safer to stay inside.

Count down continues. 108 days until retirement; 123 days until journey to Florida.

Sorry for all the mishaps of your trip but also glad that you both made it back alrite and in one piece. Trips like that are quite tiring and am glad you are going to rest up for another day.
